Dayara Bugyal Trek 2026: Cost, Itinerary, Route & Best Time

4 Days

What is Dayara Bugyal Trek? Overview, Route & Best Time

Dayara Bugyal is a 4-day trek (5 days including the drive from Dehradun) in Uttarkashi district, Uttarakhand. It starts from Raithal village, covers roughly 21 km in total and reaches about 11,800 to 12,000 ft at Dayara Top. It is rated easy to moderate and works well for first-time Himalayan trekkers. April to June and mid-September to November give the clearest views, and December to March is the snow season.

About the Dayara Bugyal Trek

Most people choose Dayara because it feels like a proper Himalayan trek without a frightening summit day. You walk out of Raithal through village fields, spend a day inside oak and rhododendron forest, and then the trees simply stop. The meadow opens up in front of you, wide and rolling, with Bandarpoonch, Srikanth and the Gangotri peaks lined up behind it on a clear day.

A bugyal is a high-altitude meadow that sits above the tree line. Dayara is one of the largest in Garhwal, and it changes completely with the season. In May it is green and full of wildflowers. In October the grass turns golden and the sky is at its sharpest. In January the whole slope is under snow.

We run this trek from Dehradun through the year. This page tells you what the trail is actually like, what it costs, who it suits and what to prepare, so you can decide with the full picture.

Why Trek to Dayara Bugyal

The meadow itself. After a day and a half in forest, the open grassland feels almost unreal. It rolls in every direction with very few rocks or trees breaking the line.

The forest walk. The lower trail is oak, maple and rhododendron. In spring the rhododendrons are in bloom, and in autumn the leaves turn. Birdsong is constant, and if you are lucky you may hear a Himalayan monal early in the morning.

The mountain views. From the meadow and the top you can see Bandarpoonch, Kala Nag (Black Peak), Srikanth, Draupadi Ka Danda, Jaonli and the Gangotri group. How much you see depends on the weather, and mornings are usually the clearest.

The villages. Raithal and Barsu are working Garhwali villages with wooden houses, terraced fields and a slower pace. A night in the village before the trek is part of the experience.

Snow, if you want it. In winter Dayara is one of the more accessible snow treks in Uttarakhand, and you do not need technical climbing skills for it.

How Difficult Is the Dayara Bugyal Trek?

It is not technically hard, but “easy” can be misleading, so here is the honest version.

  • The first climb out of Raithal is steep. The trail is clear, but it tests your legs on day one, especially with a loaded backpack.
  • Most days are 3 to 5 hours of steady walking, with gradual ascents and a few flat stretches.
  • The final push to Dayara Top is the hardest part. It is steeper than the rest of the route, and noticeably slower when there is snow on the ground.
  • You sleep above 10,000 ft. Altitude sickness can affect anyone at this height, including fit people, which is why the itinerary climbs gradually.
  • Weather changes things. Rain turns the trail slushy, and snowfall can hide it. We may shorten or change a day if conditions are not safe.

If you can jog 5 km without stopping and are comfortable walking 5 to 6 hours with a day pack, you should do well. If you have never walked more than a few kilometres at a stretch, start training 4 to 6 weeks before your date.

Dayara Bugyal Winter Trek

Winter is the most popular time and also the most demanding. Expect snow on the upper trail, much colder nights and slower walking. Day temperatures can feel pleasant in the sun, but camps cool quickly after sunset.

For a winter batch you should have insulated, waterproof boots with good grip, several warm layers, proper gloves and a warm cap. We carry gaiters and microspikes when conditions need them [confirm]. Snow is never guaranteed on a given date, so treat it as likely in January and February and possible in late December and March.

Where You Stay and What You Eat

At Raithal you sleep in a village homestay or guesthouse. On the trek you stay in tents shared by two or three people, with sleeping bags and mats provided. It is basic mountain camping, not a hotel, and the nights are cold. Toilets are dry toilet tents set up at each camp, so carry toilet paper and avoid wet wipes, which do not break down.

Meals are simple, hot and vegetarian. A typical day looks like this:

  • Breakfast: paratha, poha or upma with tea or coffee
  • Packed lunch or trail lunch: roti and sabzi, boiled egg or potato, fruit
  • Evening snack: tea or coffee with pakora, biscuits or noodles
  • Dinner: rice, roti, dal, vegetables and soup, often with a dessert

Tell us about any allergies or dietary needs when you book.

How to Get Fit for Dayara Bugyal

A simple target works well: be able to cover 5 km in about 40 minutes by jogging or fast walking before your trek. Start 4 to 6 weeks early.

  1. Run or fast-walk 3 to 4 times a week, building from 2 km to 5 km.
  2. Climb stairs for 15 to 20 minutes, with a loaded backpack in the last two weeks.
  3. Do squats and lunges twice a week for legs and knees.
  4. Walk on weekends for 1 to 2 hours on uneven or hilly ground if you can.

Good preparation makes the trek enjoyable, and it also lowers the risk of altitude problems. If you are over 50, have a heart or blood-pressure condition, or have not exercised in a long time, please talk to your doctor before booking.

Safety, Altitude and Emergencies

Altitude sickness: Headache, nausea, dizziness and poor sleep above 10,000 ft can be early signs. Tell your trek leader straight away, because it is easier to manage early. Drink plenty of water, walk slowly, and do not push on if you feel unwell.

Our safety setup: Every group has a certified trek leader, a local guide, a first-aid kit and an oxygen cylinder. Your leader checks how everyone is doing at camp.

Emergency exit: From the lower camps you walk back to Raithal. Near the top the exit is usually down to Barsu. Evacuation can take many hours because of the distances involved.

Nearest hospital: The district hospital in Uttarkashi is the closest, about an hour’s drive from Raithal. For serious cases, Dehradun is 8 to 9 hours away.

Network and charging: Mobile signal is patchy on the trail and may work at a few spots including the top. Do not rely on it for work. Electricity is available only at the base, so bring a power bank.

Water: Carry about 2 litres each day. There are only a few refill points on the trail, and your leader will tell you where.

Responsible Trekking

The meadows here are grazing land for local shepherds and a fragile ecosystem. Carry all your waste back down, including wrappers and tissues. Do not pick flowers or leave the trail, avoid loud music, and do not use soap or shampoo in streams or ponds. Respect the people who live here, and ask before photographing villagers.
